Bayerische Motoren Werke AG (info) (BMW), (English: Bavarian Motor Works) is a German automobile, motorcycle and engine manufacturing company founded in 1916. It also owns and produces the Mini marque, and is the parent company of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. BMW produces motorcycles under BMW Motorrad and Husqvarna brands. In 2010, the BMW group produced 1,481,253 automobiles and 112,271 motorcycles across all its brands.

BMW entered existence as a business entity following a restructuring of the Rapp Motorenwerke aircraft engine manufacturing firm in 1917. After the end of World War I in 1918, BMW was forced to cease aircraft engine production by the terms of the Versailles Armistice Treaty.The company consequently shifted to motorcycle production in 1923 once the restrictions of the treaty started to be lifted, followed by automobiles in 1928–29.
The circular blue and white BMW logo or roundel is portrayed by BMW as the movement of an aircraft propeller, to signify the white blades cutting through the blue sky – an interpretation that BMW adopted for convenience in 1929, twelve years after the roundel was created. The emblem evolved from the circular Rapp Motorenwerke company logo, from which the BMW company grew, combined with the blue and white colours of the flag of Bavaria, reversed to produce the BMW roundel. However, the origin of the logo being based on the movement of a propeller is in dispute, according to an article posted in 2010 by the New York Times, quoting "At the BMW Museum in Munich, Anne Schmidt-Possiwal, explained that the blue-and-white company logo did not represent a spinning propeller, but was meant to show the colours of the Free State of Bavaria."[unreliable source?]
BMW's first significant aircraft engine was the BMW IIIa inline-six liquid-cooled engine of 1918, much preferred for its high-altitude performance. With German rearmament in the 1930s, the company again began producing aircraft engines for the Luftwaffe. Among its successful World War II engine designs were the BMW 132 and BMW 801 air-cooled radial engines, and the pioneering BMW 003 axial-flow turbojet, which powered the tiny, 1944-1945-era jet-powered "emergency fighter", the Heinkel He 162 Spatz. The BMW 003 jet engine was tested in the A-1b version of the world's first jet fighter, the Messerschmitt Me 262, but BMW engines failed on takeoff, a major setback for the jet fighter program until successful testing with Junkers engines.

The BMW Z4 is a rear-wheel drive sports car by the German car maker BMW. It follows a line of past BMW roadsters such as the BMW Z1, BMW 507, BMW Z8, and the BMW Z3. The Z4 replaces the Z3. First generation production started in 2002 at BMW USA's Greer, South Carolina plant, with production of both roadster and coupe forms. When debuted, it won Automobile Magazine "Design of the Year Award". Starting with the 2009 model year, the second-generation Z4 is built at BMW's Regensburg, Germany plant as a retractable hardtop roadster. In 2009, the BMW Z4 won the Red Dot Design Award.

The first-generation BMW Z4 was designated the E85 in roadster form and E86 in coupé form. It was designed by Danish BMW-designer Anders Warming.
From 2003 the Z4 Roadster is available as a 3.0i (3.0 L I6 with 231 hp), a 3.0si available with the new generation 3.0 L I6 with 265 hp (198 kW) , a 2.5si with a 2.5 I6 with 218 bhp (163 kW; 221 PS), a 2.2i with a straight-6 170 bhp (127 kW; 172 PS) engine, or a 2.0i with a 150 bhp (112 kW; 152 PS) 2.0 L I4. The Z4 coupé is available only in the high-performance 3.0si trim powered by the 3.0 L 225 hp (168 kW) I6. The Z4 (E85 Roadster/E86 Coupe) was built at the Greer plant.

bmw regulators open BMW safety probe

regulators open BMW safety probe Federal safety regulators have opened an investigation into whether some BMW 7-series sedans are prone to rolling away once parked.

The probe of 120,000 BMWs from model years 2002 to 2008 came after a driver said the car rolled away after the consumer exited the vehicle.

BMW safety probe The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it is looking at BMW's "Comfort Access" electronic access and ignition system and an electronic transmission shifter with the gear selector mounted on the steering column. The shifter is designed to automatically shift the vehicle to the park position under a variety of conditions, including after the driver has pressed the ignition button to turn the engine off.

Data submitted to the agency by BMW include field reports describing additional roll-away incidents in vehicles equipped with the system. No injuries or crashes have been reported, and the agency said it doesn't know what is causing the roll-aways.

BMW continued dramatic growth for the month of July, just as the Bavarian motorcycle manufacturer had for the first half of 2011.
For July 2011, a total of 11,054 motorcycles were delivered to customers, which was up 10.3 percent over 2010 when 10,022 motorcycles were delivered. For the first seven months of 2011, BMW has sold 71,634 motorcycles, which is up 6.9 percent over the same period in 2010.
BMW Motorrad says the Boxer models continue to register the highest sales. Also, the company has observed higher-than-expected sales of the K 1600 GT & K1600GTL touring bikes. These innovative, de luxe touring motorcycles with six cylinder inline engines are the first of their kind in the history of BMW Motorrad.
At the start of the 2011 season, Bavarian motorcycle customers benefited from the revised flat-twin engine roadster BMW R 1200 R that for the first time will also be available as a classical variant. Moreover, the motorcycle manufacturer presented the new G 650 GS, yet another particularly appealing GS model with a single cylinder engine.
As for the BMW's subsidiary company, Husqvarna, 4,394 motorcycles were delivered year-to-day, which was down 21.4 percent over the same period in 2010. This number includes 864 motorcycles in July, compared to 931 (down 7.2 percent) in July 2010.
